The Haverfarm: Is it Sustainable?
What is sustainable? The most frequently referenced definition of sustainable originates from the Brundtland Report (1987). In the report, it is stated that something is sustainable when it “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Sustainable Development, np.). The needs referenced in this definition, generally, are the extrinsic values of agriculture: increasing yields, and reducing costs. Sustainability is now a characteristic that many farms strive for, including the educational farm based at Haverford College, named ‘The Haverfarm”. The Haverfarm’s mission statement includes integrating sustainable forms of agriculture and food distribution into the Haverford community (Haverfarm Report).
